Grenoble

First-class museums, full of history castle, and unique places that reflect the city’s desire to always surprise and innovate; Grenoble has been successfully reinventing itself for more than two centuries, often leading the way for cultural, social, and industrial trends. It seems almost impossible to sum up Grenoble in a few essentials. At least the mountains are an ever-present constant, waiting at the trend of every corner. You will first learn to name them before curiously exploring them, and standing breathless in front of their beauty.

How to reach Grenoble

From Lyon

The easiest way to reach Grenoble is to land in Lyon – Saint Exupéry Airport. From there, you need to take a 1h bus ride to Grenoble. Two compagnies ensure these connections : Blablacar and FlixBus. With these two compagnies, there is roughly one bus every half hour.

From Paris

The best way to reach Grenoble from Paris is by Train (TGV). Most direct trains going to Grenoble from Paris leave from the train station named Paris Gare de Lyon (even if Lyon is mentioned in the name, that train station is in Paris). From this train station, you need to book a TGV to Grenoble: https://www.sncf-connect.com/en-en/

To reach Paris Gare de Lyon, you are likely to arrive from the airport Roissy Charles de Gaulle or Orly. From these two airports, different options are possible.

From Roissy Charles de Gaulle Airport to Train station (Paris Gare de Lyon)

There is a train station at Charles de Gaulle, but trains to go to Grenoble stop at Lyon, and you will need to do connection in Lyon train station (Gare Lyon Part Dieu), to Grenoble.

To go from Charles de Gaulle to the train station in Paris named Paris Gare de Lyon (once again, not in Lyon) you have to follow the signs at the airport for Bagages-Sortie and then Trains (RER B). Buy a ticket at the automatic machine to Paris Gare de Lyon, then take the RER Line B and stop at the metro station “Châtelet-les-Halles”. At “Châtelet-les-Halles”, take a connection with RER Line A (Direction Marne-la-Vallée-Chessy or Boissy-Saint-Léger) at stop at Gare de Lyon.

Here a map for that trip that shows all the options (https://goo.gl/maps/tQFBy8vSZrDU2whQ8). It takes from 1h to 1h30.

From Orly to Train station (Paris Gare de Lyon)

From Orly, to go to Gare de Lyon inside Paris, at the airport, follow the signs for Bagages-Sortie and then for RER B Paris via ORLYVAL. Take ORLYVAL to the station named Antony. At Antony station, take RER line B (direction Paris) to Châtelet-Les Halles. At Châtelet-Les Halles, take RER line A (direction Marne-la-Vallée-Chessy or Boissy-Saint-Léger) to Gare de Lyon.

This map will give you all the option (https://goo.gl/maps/FRaXZJn7x9SLVzqe6), but we advise you to follow the one mentioned above, which is simpler.

From Geneva

You can also land in Geneva. From Geneva, two compagnies ensure bus connections with Grenoble: Blablacar and FlixBus. With these two compagnies, there is roughly one bus every hour or so. Taking a train is also possible, but much longer will require a connection in Geneva main train station. Attention: you might need a passport and not just an ID card for Switzerland.

Once arrived in Grenoble

You are very likely to arrive in Grenoble at the train station or bus station (which are next to each other). From here, there is a dense connection with public transportation. If your hotel is in the city center, which is likely, Tramway A and B, whose stops are just next to the train station, will lead you to your hotels. You can buy tickets at the automatic machine, which accepts credit cards at the tram station. If you need to take a bus. Very recently, a direct payment by contactless credit card has been introduced. However, this might not give you a justification for future reimbursement. The full network of public transportation in Grenoble is accessible via Google Maps and other apps and will give you timetables as well as routes to reach you desired place.
